Using Susol single use instruments in everyday clinical practice

All Podiatrists and Foot Health Practitioners run their clinics according to their preferred timetable and what the presenting patient may need with regard to clinical time. Many clinics offer a first-time patient a longer appointment period to ascertain a full history and to create an agreed treatment plan.

In many cases, a routine treatment may be all the patient requires. This generally involves nail care and callus treatment. Susol is a range of single use podiatry instruments that can provide the practitioner with packs or single wrapped instruments.

The Basic Care Set consists of a Susol Nail Nipper and a double-sided emery board. Naturally, when a nail is cut, it needs to be filed down to prevent rough edges catching on hosiery and tearing the nail. The Basic Care Set is a sterile ready-to-use pack for these basic treatments.

If the practitioner likes to clear debris, or onychophosis, from the nail sulci then the Nail Care Set is a better option. In each set is the now instantly recognisable Susol Nail Nipper, a double-sided emery board AND a blacks file. Each Blacks file has ridges that are backward pointing toward the handle. This design allows the debris to be safely removed from the sulci while reducing the risk of pushing it further down into the sulcus.

Finally, the Podiatry Set consists of Susol Nail Nipper, a double-sided emery board, a Blacks file, a no 3 Scalpel handle and a pair of dressing scissors, is available. This five-piece set has every tool a practitioner needs for routine footcare.

In clinic, whether the practitioner has a selection of Susol sets, or a preferred set, they can be assured each set is sterile and ready-to-use. Once the treatment has been carried out, there is no need for time-consuming decontamination and sterilisation. In one NHS Trust, when podiatrists carried out a time and motion study, up to 30% of their time was taken up with instrument decontamination and processing. With Susol single use instruments, there’s no need for an expensive autoclave, no need for specific water, no need for regular autoclave servicing. A Sharps Bin is all that is required. Using a specialist waste company all the instruments and associated sharps are removed in one fell swoop.
