Pack up your troubles- Debunk the environmental myths (part 2)
Packaging is an important consideration when manufacturing single use instruments. It has to be robust enough to withstand the transportation and storage process before reaching the end user.
With some instruments, such as Ingrowing Toenail Nippers for example, there is a danger of strikethrough, where the instrument can pierce the package from inside. This presents a potential threat of injury for anyone handling the pack. Where an instrument presents a strikethrough danger, small protective caps are used. You will notice all Susol nippers are ‘capped’ as are the Blacks Files.
Another major consideration is the size of packaging. Susol packaging is minimal. Ten complete podiatry packs can be provided in an outer measuring just 21cm x 26cm x 13cm. Most Easter Egg packs are bigger!
This helps easy storage in the smallest of clinics. Susol packaging and instrument wraps are smaller than other single use packs on the market. The box and paper are all recyclable.
A final function of paper is regulatory. Each instrument or pack has to be identified correctly with the codes, the barcode and all means of traceability. Bailey Instruments is fully compliant with ISO 13485, an internationally recognised standard for quality management systems in the design and manufacture of medical devices.
