Nail Surgery and single use instruments
Once qualified, the podiatrist has a Certificate in Local Analgesia which affords the opportunity to carry out nail surgery. More common procedures are the Partial Nail Avulsion and the Total Nail Avulsion, often truncated to PNA and TNA respectively.
The Susol Nail Surgery Set contains the following items:
- Thwaites Nipper
- Beaver Handle
- Locke Elevator
- Blacks File
- Scalpel Handle No3
- Dressing Scissor
- Halstead Mosquito Forceps 12.5cm
- Ribbon Tourniquet
This list allows for PNA/TNA procedures to be carried out using sterile ready-to-use instruments. The sets come in packs of ten.
Having the Susol Nail Surgery Set on the shelf means the practice is always ready to carry out a nail surgery procedure. Just pick up a pack and off you go.
Within the NHS, some podiatry departments who are supplied by Sterile Services Departments keep a stock of Susol Nail Surgery Sets. This is useful for outlying clinics that don’t take direct deliveries, or for more rural clinics that may experience delivery delays, for example after a snow fall.
The Thwaites Nipper is modelled on the standard reusable Thwaites pattern so is easily adopted by users new to single use instruments.
Carrying out a PNA or TNA is when the podiatrist is more likely to bring their instruments into direct contact with blood or pus. Decontamination of nail surgery instruments is essential to avoid cross contamination. By using a single use pack, the podiatrist can be confident that each Set used is sterile and ready-to-use.
