Smooth Running - Extend the Life of Your Instruments with This Easy Maintenance Tip

We’re often asked about instrument maintenance. ‘How do I look after my instruments?’

The vast majority of reusable surgical instruments purchased for regular everyday use in podiatry are manufactured from stainless steel and will need to be autoclaved. The recommended cycle within an autoclave takes the instrument to 134 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 3 minutes, at a pressure of around 2 bar.

In the autoclave, jointed instruments should be left open so the steam can access all areas. This harsh environment can affect the joints, of a nipper or scissor for example, so it is important that the correct lubricant is selected.

We recommend Premixslip

Premixslip is a non-sticky, non-toxic, silicone free and water-soluble mineral oil lubricant that can withstand the high temperatures of autoclaving without becoming gummy. It can also be used to help free any stiff or sticky joints. Use on your instruments BEFORE autoclaving, Premixslip will greatly reduce repair and maintenance costs of your podiatry instruments.

Premixslip has the consistency of skimmed milk and doesn’t smell ‘greasy’. Neither does it feel ‘oily so it is not unpleasant to use within the clinic. It is steam penetrable and steam sterilisable.

Premixslip is available in 500ml bottles (Product Code: CNR002)
